SASLI exists to promote quality and standards of good practice in the delivery of British Sign Language (BSL)/English Interpreting throughout Scotland.
Work of the Association includes:
- Recruitment and ongoing training of new interpreters
- Development of a programme of Continuous Professional Development
- Support services for members
- Membership meetings
- Vetting of Interpreters via Disclosure Scotland
- Provision of professional indemnity insurance
- Dissemination of information and resources for both interpreters and users of interpreting services
- Co-operation and partnership with other organisations working in the field (nationally & internationally)
The membership of SASLI consists of Registered Interpreters and Associate (or trainee) Interpreters. The day to day work of the Association is carried out by the staff of the Association. The management of the Association is overseen by an Executive Committee. Funding of the Association comes in the main from the Scottish Executive and from membership fees.
Aims & Objectives of SASLI ...
- To foster and enhance Sign Language Interpreting services so that Deaf and hearing people may have adequate communication for all purposes but in particularly in relation to education, medical, legal, spiritual, employment and general administrative matters.
- To maintain and administer a Register of Sign Language Interpreters.
- To co-operate with any recognised body concerned with the welfare of Deaf people and in the provision of Interpreter Services for Deaf people throughout Great Britain.
- To encourage and assist with the training and assessment of those wishing to develop Interpreting Skills
- Generally to take such steps as will promote the status and reputation of the Association.
